Lutheran Women’s Missionary League
“Serve the Lord with Gladness” | First Thursdays at Immanuel
The LWML in Joplin — the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League at Immanuel Lutheran Church — gathers each month to grow in faith and serve the Lord with gladness. The LWML is the women’s organization of our national church body, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. For generations its members have supported mission and ministry through prayer, hands-on service, and the well-loved “mite” offerings that fund mission grants around the world.

Mites: small gifts, wide reach

A mite is a small gift, often a few spare coins. The name comes from the widow in the Gospel who gave two small coins, all she had. Immanuel’s mite box sits in the narthex (the lobby). Together, those coins fund mission work around the world.
And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.”
Mark 12:42–43 (ESV)
LWML Sunday and the fall retreat
Each year on the first Sunday in October, the whole congregation celebrates LWML Sunday and thanks God for this work. Wear purple if you have it. Read about LWML Sunday 2026. Each fall our LWML also holds a retreat, and every woman is invited. Watch the church calendar for the date.
The LWML’s mission: to assist each woman of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world.
“Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!”
Psalm 100:2 (ESV)
