Pentecost 3 bulletin cover. Immanuel Lutheran Church LCMS. Joplin Missouri.

We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.

A portion of the Epistle Reading appointed for the Third Sunday after Pentecost, from 2 Corinthians 5. We welcome you to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin, and pray that the seed of faith will continue to sprout and grow among us as God has promised!

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 13, 2021 — Divine Service, Setting Three

HYMN “Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now” 902

Lord Jesus Christ, be present now;
Our hearts in true devotion bow.
Your Spirit send with grace divine,
And let Your truth within us shine.

Unseal our lips to sing Your praise
In endless hymns through all our days.
Increase our faith and light our minds;
And set us free from doubt that blinds.

Then shall we join the hosts that cry,
“O holy, holy, Lord Most high!”
And in the light of that blest place
We then shall see You face to face.

Δ All glory to the Father, Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One!
To You, O blessed Trinity,
Be praise throughout eternity!

INVOCATION, CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION 184

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. Matthew 28:19b

Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Hebrews 10:22

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8

I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Psalm 32:5

Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all.
Amen.

Psalm 1

Blessèd is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” 186

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

KYRIE “Lord, Have Mercy” 186

Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ, have mercy upon us; Lord, have mercy upon us. Mark 10:47

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS “Glory to God in the Highest” 187

Glory be to God on high;
And on earth, peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee,
We glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory.
O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. John 1:29
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22
And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. Blessed Lord, since You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

KIDS TALK

OLD TESTAMENT Ezekiel 17:22–24

Thus says the Lord God: “I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bear branches and produce fruit and become a noble cedar. And under it will dwell every kind of bird; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. And all the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord; I bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
On your wondrous works, I will meditate,
and I will declare your greatness.

EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 5:1–10

We know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

TRIPLE ALLELUIA 190

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 4:26–34

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourth chapter.
Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

[Jesus] said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED 192

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN “I Love Your Kingdom, Lord” 651

I love Your kingdom, Lord,
The place of Your abode,
The Church our blest Redeemer saved
With His own precious blood.

Beyond my highest joy
I prize its heavenly ways,
Its sweet communion, solemn vows,
Its hymns of love and praise.

I love Your Church, O God,
Your saints in every land,
Dear as the apple of Your eye
And graven on Your hand.

For them my tears shall fall;
For them my prayers ascend;
For them my cares and toils be given
Till toils and cares shall end.

Sure as Your truth shall last,
To Zion shall be given
The brightest glories earth can yield
And brighter bliss of heaven.

THE SERMON

OFFERTORY and PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERING 192

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit in me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence,
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation,
And uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. Psalm 51:10-12

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

LORD’S PRAYER Matthew 6:9-13

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

SALUTATION, BENEDICAMUS and BENEDICTION 201

The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22
And with thy spirit.

Bless we the Lord. Psalm 103:1
Thanks be to God.

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
Amen. Amen. Amen.

HYMN “On What Has Now Been Sown” 921

On what has now been sown
Thy blessing, Lord, bestow;
The power is Thine alone
To make it sprout and grow.
Do Thou in grace the harvest raise
And Thou alone shalt have the praise!

To Thee our wants are known,
From Thee are all our powers;
Accept what is Thine own
And pardon what is ours.
Our praises, Lord, and prayers receive,
And to Thy Word a blessing give.

O grant that each of us
Now met before Thee here,
May meet together thus
When Thou and Thine appear
And follow Thee to heaven, our home.
Even so, amen, Lord Jesus, come!
