Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 6, 2021 — Divine Service, Setting One with Holy Communion

HYMN “Built on the Rock” 645: 1,3,5

Built on the Rock the Church shall stand
Even when steeples are falling.
Crumbled have spires in every land;
Bells still are chiming and calling,
Calling the young and old to rest,
But above all the souls distressed,
Longing for life everlasting.

We are God’s house of living stones,
Built for His own habitation.
He through baptismal grace us owns
Heirs of His wondrous salvation.
Were we but two His name to tell,
Yet He would deign with us to dwell
With all His grace and His favor.

Grant, then, O God, Your will be done,
That, when the church bells are ringing,
Many in saving faith may come
Where Christ His message is bringing:
“I know my own; My own know Me.
You, not the world, My face shall see.
My peace I leave with you. Amen.”

INVOCATION 151

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. Matthew 28:19

CONFESSION and DECLARATION OF GRACE

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9

silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:1-2; Philippians 1:6
Amen.

Psalm 130 (antiphon: v. 7)

O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is | steadfast love,*
     and with him is plentiful re- | demption.

Out | of the depths*
     I cry to you,
| O Lord!

O Lord, | hear my voice!*
     Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for
| mercy!

If you, O Lord, should mark in- | iquities,*
     O Lord,
| who could stand?

But with you there is for- | giveness,*
     that you | may be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my | soul waits,*
     and in his | word I hope;

my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the | morning,*
     more than watchmen for the | morning.

O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is | steadfast love,*
     and with him is plentiful re- | demption.

And he will redeem | Israel*
     from all his in- | iquities.

Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
     and to the Holy
| Spirit;
as it was in the be-
| ginning,*
     is now, and will be forever.
| Amen.

O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is | steadfast love,*
     and with him is plentiful re- | demption.

SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray: Almighty and eternal God, Your Son Jesus triumphed over the prince of demons and freed us from bondage to sin. Amen.

KIDS TALK

OLD TESTAMENT Genesis 3:8–15

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.

I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
On your wondrous works, I will meditate,
and I will declare your greatness.

EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA AND VERSE 156

Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
Alleluia, alleluia!

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 3:20–35

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the third chapter.
Glory to You, O Lord.

Then [Jesus] went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”

And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house.

“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” — for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

HYMN “Rise! To Arms! With Prayer Employ You” 668: 1,2

Rise! To Arms! With prayer employ you,
O Christians, lest the foe destroy you;
For Satan has designed your fall.
Wield God’s Word, the weapon glorious;
Against all foes be thus victorious,
For God protects you from them all.
Fear not the hordes of hell, Here is Immanuel.
Hail the Savior!
The strong foes yield To Christ, our shield,
And we, the victors, hold the field.

Cast afar this world’s vain pleasure
And boldly strive for heavenly treasure.
Be steadfast in the Savior’s might.
Trust the Lord, who stands beside you,
For Jesus from all harm will hide you.
By faith you conquer in the fight.
Take courage, weary soul! Look forward to the goal!
Joy awaits you!
The race well run, Your long war won,
Your crown shines splendid as the sun.

SERMON

NICENE CREED 158

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

OFFERING and OFFERTORY 159

What shall I render to the Lord
for all His benefits to me?
I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and will call on the name of the Lord.
I will take the cup of salvation
and will call on the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows to the Lord now
in the presence of all His people,
in the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT +

PREFACE 160

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

PROPER PREFACE

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Lord, our God, for in Christ You have given us the victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. Therefore, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

SANCTUS “Holy, Holy, Holy” 161

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might:
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

With joyful praise, Lord God, we bless You this day for having sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to be the perfect sacrifice so that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. Grant that our lives know the peace that surpasses all understanding. Invited by Your grace, grant that we come to Your Table with grateful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, that we live with confidence, securely awaiting the eternal feast with all the saints in glory.
Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matt 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

PAX DOMINI “The Peace of the Lord” 163

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Amen.

AGNUS DEI “Lamb of God” 163

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

Distribution of the Sacrament will be by family groups, at the direction of the usher. Children may come forward for a contactless blessing. Gluten-free and alcohol-free portions are available near the center aisle.

DISTRIBUTION HYMN “I Walk in Danger All the Way” 716

I walk in danger all the way.
The thought shall never leave me
That Satan, who has marked his prey,
Is plotting to deceive me.
This foe with hidden snares
May seize me unawares
If I should fail to watch and pray.
I walk in dangers all the way.

I pass through trials all the way,
With sin and ills contending;
In patience I must bear each day
The cross of God’s own sending.
When in adversity I know not where to flee,
When storms of woe my soul dismay,
I pass through trials all the way.

And death pursuers me all the way,
Nowhere I rest securely;
He comes by night, he comes by day,
He takes his prey most surely.
A failing breath, and I In death’s strong grasp may lie
To face eternity today
As death pursues me all the way.

I walk with angels all the way.
They shield me and protect me.
All Satan’s power is held at bay
When heavenly hosts attend me.
They are my sure defense, All fears and sorrow, hence!
Unharmed by foes, do what they may,
I walk with angels all the way.

I walk with Jesus all the way.
His guidance never fails me.
Within His wounds I find a stay
When Satan’s power assails me;
And by His footsteps led, My path I safely tread.
No evil leads my soul astray;
I walk with Jesus all the way.

My walk is heavenward all the way;
Await, my soul, the morrow
When God’s good healing shall allay
All suffering, sin, and sorrow.
Then worldly pomp, be gone! To heaven I now press on.
If I should fail to watch and pray.
My walk is heavenward all the way.

DISTRIBUTION HYMN “Lord, Take My Hand and Lead Me” 722

Lord, take my hand and lead me Upon life’s way;
Direct, protect, and feed me From day to day.
Without Your grace and favor I go astray;
So take my hand, O Savior, And lead the way.

Lord, when the tempest rages, I need not fear,
For You, the Rock of Ages, Are always near.
Close by Your side abiding, I fear no foe,
For when Your hand is guiding, In peace I go.

Lord, when the shadows lengthen And night has come,
I know that You will strengthen My steps toward home.
Then nothing shall impede me, O blessed Friend;
So take my hand and lead me Unto the end.

DISTRIBUTION HYMN “If Thou but Trust in God” 750: 1,3,4,7

If thou but trust in God to guide thee
And hope in Him through all thy ways,
He’ll give thee strength, whate’er betide thee,
And bear thee through the evil days.
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love
Builds on the rock that naught can move.

Be patient and await His leisure
In cheerful hope, with heart content
To take whate’er the Father’s pleasure
And His discerning love hath sent,
Nor doubt our inmost wants are known
To Him who chose us for His own.

God knows full well when times of gladness
Shall be the needful thing for thee.
When He has tried thy soul with sadness
And from all guile has found thee free,
He comes to thee all unaware
And makes thee own His loving care.

Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully,
And trust His Word, though undeserving,
Thou yet shall find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed.

POST-COMMUNION CANTICLE 164

Thank the Lord and sing His praise;
Tell everyone what He has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.
He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy
With shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia.

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT 166

Let us pray. O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

HYMN Mighty Fortress” 656: 1-3

A mighty fortress is our God,
A trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from every need
That hath us now o’ertaken.
The old evil foe now means deadly woe;
Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight;
On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours could naught be done,
Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the valiant One
Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is,
Of Sabaoth Lord, And there’s none other God;
He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill,
All eager to devour us,
We tremble not, we fear no ill;
They shall not overpower us.
This world’s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none. He’s judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.
