HOLY BAPTISM of William Redding Ideker (8:00)

HOLY BAPTISM of Elizabeth Elaine Stone (10:30)

Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:18b-19And the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.” 1 Peter 3:21

The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

How are you named?

William Redding Ideker / Elizabeth Elaine Stone, receive the sign of the holy cross, both upon your forehead and upon your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.

Let us pray.
Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all.

You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Holy Baptism.

Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin.

We pray that You would behold this child according to Your boundless mercy and bless him/her with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in him/her that has been inherited from Adam and which he himself/she herself has committed since, would be drowned and die.

Grant that he/she would be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, he/she would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark:

And they were bringing children to Jesus that He might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the children comes to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And He took them in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands on them.  (Mark 10:13-16)

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Together as the people of God we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even evermore.
Amen.

William Redding/Elizabeth Elaine, do you renounce the devil and all his works and ways?
I do renounce them.

Do you believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?
Yes, I believe.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, descended into hell and on the third day rose again from the dead? Do you believe He ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, and will come from thence to judge the living and the dead?
Yes, I believe.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
Yes, I believe.

Do you desire to be baptized?
Yes, I do.

William Redding Ideker / Elizabeth Elaine Stone, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting.
Amen.

Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ, who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end.

In Holy Baptism God has made you co-heirs with us of all the treasures of heaven. We receive you in Christ’s name as a brother/sister in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us all out of darkness, into His marvelous light.

Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord.

HYMN “Father Welcomes All His Children” 605: 3

Let us gladly die to sin;
Let us daily rise with Him,
Walk in the love of Christ our Lord,
Live in the peace of God.

Father welcomes all his children
To His family Through His Son.
Father giving His salvation,
Life eternal has been won.

INVOCATION 151

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CONFESSION and DECLARATION OF GRACE

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:8-9

silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

PSALM Psalm 116:1-9; antiphon: verse 5

Gracious is the LORD and righteous;
our God is merciful.

I love the LORD, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Because He inclined His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me; The pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
Then I called on the name of the LORD:
“O LORD, I pray, deliver my soul!”
Gracious is the LORD and righteous;
our God is merciful.
The LORD preserves the simple.
When I was brought low, He saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your rest,
For the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.
For You have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;
I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Gracious is the LORD and righteous;
our God is merciful.

OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 50:4-10

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning He awakens; He awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near; who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord GOD helps me; who will declare me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

HYMN “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” 450: 3

What Thou, O Lord, hast suffered
Was all for sinners’ gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But Thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior!
‘Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor,
And grant to me Thy grace.

EPISTLE James 3:1-12

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water..

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA and VERSE 156

Alleluia! Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
Alleluia, alleluia!

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:14-29

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter.
Glory to You, O Lord.

When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried outand said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.”But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

HYMN “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” 770

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear–
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee;
Thou wilt find a solace there.

SERMON

What shall I render to the Lord
for all His benefits to me?
I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving

I will take the cup of salvation
and will call on the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows to the Lord now
in the presence of all His people,
in the courts of the Lord’s house,
in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

HYMN “Come, My Soul with Every Care” 779: 1,2,5

Come, my soul, with every care,
Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He Himself has bid thee pray,
Therefore will not turn away.

Thou art coming to a King,
Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and power are such
None can ever ask too much.

While I am a pilgrim here,
Let Thy love my spirit cheer;
As my guide, my guard, my friend,
Lead me to my journey’s end.
