To the Glory of God and in Memory of Harry Martin Podszus

May 21, 2021 — 1:00 pm

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19
Amen.

In Holy Baptism, Harry Podszus was clothed with the robe of Christ’s righteousness that covered all his sin. St. Paul says, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

“For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.” Romans 6:3-5

1 Corinthians 13:12

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

HYMN “I’m But a Stranger Here” 748

Susan Ideker, soloist

I’m but a stranger here, heaven is my home.
Earth is a desert drear, heaven is my home.
    Danger and sorrow stand
    ‘Round me on every hand;
Heaven is my fatherland. Heaven is my home.

What though the tempest rage, heaven is my home.
Short is my pilgrimage, heaven is my home.
    And time’s wild wintry blast
    Soon shall be over-past;
I shall reach home at last. Heaven is my home.

Therefore I murmur not, heaven is my home.
Whatever my earthly lot, heaven is my home.
    And I shall surely stand
    There at my Lord’s right hand;
Heaven is my fatherland. Heaven is my home.

Revelation 21:1–4

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray. O God of grace and mercy, we give thanks for Your loving-kindness shown to Harry and to all Your servants who, having finished their course in faith, now rest from their labors.  Grant that we also may be faithful unto death and receive the crown of eternal life, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Psalm 116:1, 5 and 15

I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.
Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His saints.

HYMN “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” 461: 1,3,5,6,7

I know that my Redeemer lives;
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, He lives who once was dead;
He lives, my ever-living head.

He lives to bless me with His love;
He lives to plead for me above;
He lives, my hungry soul to feed;
He lives to help in time of need.

He lives to silence all my fears;
He lives to wipe away my tears;
He lives to calm my troubled heart;
He lives all blessings to impart.

He lives, my kind, wise, heavenly friend;
He lives and loves me to the end;
He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing;
He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

He lives and grants me daily breath;
He lives and I shall conquer death;
He lives my mansion to prepare;
He lives to bring me safely there.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory?
    O death, where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

SERMON

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

LORD’S PRAYER

Vater unser,
der du bist im Himmel,
Geheiliget werde dein Name,
dein Reich komme,
dein Wille geschehe,
Amen.

NUNC DIMITTIS

Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace; Your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation which You have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal You to the nations and the glory of Your people Israel.

“I am the resurrection and the life,” says the Lord.  “He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die.” John 11:25

HYMN “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus” 685

Susan Ideker, soloist

Let us ever walk with Jesus,
Follow His example pure,
Through a world that would deceive us
And to sin our spirits lure.
Onward in His footsteps treading,
Pilgrims here, our home above,
Full of faith and hope and love,
Let us do the Father’s bidding.
Faithful Lord, with me abide;
I will follow where You guide.

Let us suffer here with Jesus
And with patience bear our cross.
Joy will follow all our sadness;
Where He is, there is no loss.
Though today we sow no laughter,
We shall reap celestial joy;
All discomforts that annoy
Shall give way to mirth hereafter.
Jesus, here I share Your woe;
Help me there Your joy to know.

Let us gladly die with Jesus.
Since by death He conquered death,
He will free us from destruction,
Give to us immortal breath.
Let us mortify all passion
That would lead us into sin;
And the grave that shuts us in
Shall but prove the gate to heaven.
Jesus, here with You I die,
There to live with You on high.

Let us also live with Jesus.
He has risen from the dead
That to life we may awaken.
Jesus, You are now our head.
We are Your own living members;
Where You live, there we shall be
In Your presence constantly,
Living there with You forever.
Jesus, let me faithful be,
Life eternal grant to me.

BENEDICTION

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine upon you
and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look upon you with favor
and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
Amen.
